Ikumatsu
Welcome to Ikumatsu
This is not an ordinary Ryokan. It has a special history behind it.
Kogoro Katsura and Ikumatsufs temporary home
Koin Kido (1833 – 1877), the politician during the Late Tokugawa Shogunate and the Meiji Restoration, used to be called Kogoro Katsura. He played a very important role in Tobaku movement (a movement to end the Shogunate and make the emperor a true governor of Japan).
Because this Ryokan was the gHikae Yashiki for Choshu clanh (Staff headquarter of Meiji Restoration), it was attacked several times by Sinsen-gumi (some of the greatest swordsmen of Edo and masterless samurai in Kyoto hired to protect the shogunate and counteract those who supported the emperor) and those rooms still remain.
Ikumatsu was a geisha, who fell in love with Kogoro (Koin Kido) and later became Mrs. Koin Kido.
This ryokan, Ikumatsu, is where Kogoro and Ikumatsu used to live; a ryokan with one of the longest and most distinguished history in Kyoto.
ROOM IKUMATSU
This is a room where Kogoro and Ikumatsu used to live. Since staff headquarter of Meiji Restoration was in this very room, itfs filled with tricks in preparation for sudden attacks from the enemies. Therefs a rat-run that leads to Kamogawa river. The ceiling is a drop ceiling and a big rock was set up behind the ceiling to attack uninvited guest.
KOMATSUAN TEA ROOM AND THE CEILING WITH AUTOGRAPHS OF CELEBLITIES
The ceiling of this room is filled with 32 celebrities autographs. In this room, you can see some valuable gifts from Komatsumiya Denka (Emperor Meijifs cousin) who loved this room.
YUKA (Open-air dining platform for summer)
In the summer, from May 1st to September 30th, large open-air dinning platforms are set along Kamogawa river bank. This custom has a long history, like many other customs in Kyoto, started in Edo period. There arenft many Ryokans with this Kyotofs traditional dining platform. (Most of them are operated by restaurants.) Ikumatsu offers tables and chairs (which is also rare for YUKA) for your comfort. Ikumatsufs Yuka is also famous for having the honor of hosting the first festival music concert of Naginata Float Group of the Gion Festival (one of the Three Great Festivals in Japan) every year.
Having drinks and great dinner in summer breeze on the famous Yuka is a must-have experience.
Ikumatsu also is very proud of their gorgeous outstanding food. They serve the best food in the best setting. Even when its off season for Yuka, they set up a table and chairs in your room for your comfort. This is how they show their appriciation and care for the guests. They serve absolutely great food and great service.
